A warm welcome to the I-REC Standard newsletter

24 May 2018

We are delighted to offer you our first newsletter. It is our intention with this newsletter to report on developments in international markets and our work with national governments and stakeholders. This will be our method for communicating with you about developments related to the I-REC Standard and other energy attribute tracking systems around the globe.

It is clear that markets for renewable energy are expanding around the globe. The I-REC Standard firmly believes that harmonized standards for tracking renewable energy attributes are a basic requirement for ensuring these markets are reliable, robust and transparent. This is the core of the I-REC Standard, providing a standardized mechanism for trading electricity attributes and allowing consumers of electricity to reliably verify the origin of their purchased electricity for use in their environmental, sustainability or footprint reporting.

Since its inception in 2014 the I-REC Standard has seen a significant growth in the demand for renewable energy attributes. We have also seen clear and significant efforts of many national governments to cooperate with the I-REC Standard in order to facilitate the implementation of harmonized tracking systems. This kind of collaboration is what we envisioned and what we believe is required to create the best conditions for sustainable and healthy markets. To date 23 countries have implemented the I-REC Standard within their national boundaries and this number is growing as more countries and stakeholders recognize the value of standardized tracking systems for electricity attributes.

As the markets associated with I-REC standardized energy attribute certificates is growing rapidly, we aim to keep our stakeholders up to date about the latest developments. New countries are added on a regular basis to the list of authorized I-REC Standard issuers, as are the companies which serve clients and end-consumers. On our website you can also find ‘I-REC Guides’ for step-by-step information on how to use the I-REC Standard, on how to participate in the markets or jointly develop beneficial policies. If there are other ways the I-REC Standard secretariat can serve you or improve our efforts please let us know by contacting us directly.

We look forward to the years to come and further implement standardization in energy attribute markets around the world.
